When there is a pain anywhere on the foot, first thing we do is check to see what we can see that may be the cause of the pain. There may be visible signs such as redness, callus, or corns. This can be treated by a chiropodist/podiatrist.
If there are no obvious visible signs, the pain is likely to be caused by overuse of certain structures within the foot or ankle - this is called functional pain, e.g. tendinitis, joint overuse, sprains and strains.
Foot deformities such as bunions can also cause pain elsewhere in the foot.
